Medication management

Treating the whole person means utilizing medication, comprehensive lab workup, and genetic testing when indicated.

The right medication makes the difference.

Advanced Medical Psychiatry Group providers utilize knowledge to predict which medication will be most tolerable & effective for you. We don’t just provide appointments, we provide solutions — all in the context of a caring, long-term partnership. Medications can help control the symptoms of mood disorders or addiction recovery.

Types of Psychiatric Medications

SSRIs

Some popular types of psychiatric medications include Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), often used to treat depression and anxiety by regulating serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, sleep, and other vital functions. SSRIs work by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, which means that more serotonin is available to bind to the receptors in the brain and regulate mood.

Benzodiazepines

Another popular type of medication is Benzodiazepines, which are fast-acting medications commonly used to treat anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder. They enhance the effects of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter in the brain that promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety.

Antipsychotics

Antipsychotics are another type of psychiatric medication commonly used to treat symptoms of psychosis, such as delusions or hallucinations in individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Other Psychiatric Medications

Other popular types of psychiatric medications include mood stabilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. It is important to note that psychiatric drugs should only be taken under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional, as they can have potential side effects and may interact with other medicines.

What To Expect with Medication Management

Medication management is a personalized service based on your level of need. Centered on your health and overall well-being, our medication managers will be instructed by our prescribing physicians on when, how, and how often medication needs to be taken. Our team can also communicate when medications are not working efficiently, the side effects are too overpowering, or a doctor visit may be needed. From picking up prescriptions and setting gentle reminders to administering and organizing your medications daily, we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

What We Do Prescribe:

In Addition to Common & Standard Medication

  • Benzodiazepines

We prescribe these medications in certain situations when appropriate, which the prescriber determines. These medications include “Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, and Valium” and prescriptions for sleep such as “Ambien” and “Lunesta.”

There are a few points for you to understand ahead of time. If you are already taking medication in this category, it does not guarantee we will continue them. We use these medications when indicated for specific problems and rarely continue for longer than six weeks. However, there are exceptions.

We follow guidelines that use these medications judiciously when appropriate in acute or severe symptom situations until other treatment options have become effective.

  • Buprenorphine

We employ buprenorphine products such as “Suboxone” to assist with opioid dependence or addiction treatment. Not all people are candidates for this type of treatment. If you are interested or looking for a provider to continue this medication, we can discuss it further in a visit.

We provide one-month quantity prescriptions at a time. We will assist you in determining if this is the right option.

  • Vivitrol

We prescribe and administer Vivitrol injections for those who are candidates for alcohol and/or opioid dependence/addiction treatment. In a session, we can discuss further the medication and answer any questions you may have.

Please note there is a several-week prescribing process and coordinating with all the necessary parties. There are ways to reduce this time frame, but it is not always guaranteed. Lastly, due to the significant amount of time in enrolling and coordinating each injection, we charge a one-time fee of $180.

  • Ketamine/Esketamine

Advanced Medical Psychiatry Group utilizes ketamine or esketamine as a prescription medication, along with an antidepressant taken by mouth, for treatment-resistant depression in adults.

Spravato (esketamine) was made for treatment-resistant depression; it is not intended to help prevent or relieve pain. Advanced Medical Psychiatry Group has completed the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) process for esketamine and is a certified administration site.

What We Do Not Prescribe:

  • Stimulant Medication

We do not prescribe stimulant medications in the methylphenidate and amphetamine categories. These are traditionally known as the products “Ritalin” or “Adderall” and are generally used to treat ADHD. These substances fall into a category II-controlled substance, which we do not prescribe.
